Vodafone and "Amazon Leo" Partner to Bridge Africa’s Digital Divide with Satellite Backhaul
Vodafone Group and its African subsidiary, Vodacom, have signed a landmark agreement with "Amazon Leo" (formerly Project Kuiper) to use high-speed satellite backhaul to connect 4G and 5G base stations in remote areas. The partnership, announced on March 2, 2026, aims to bypass the high costs of laying fiber in rugged terrain, accelerating digital inclusion across Europe and Africa.
In a move that signals a new frontier for African telecommunications, Vodafone and Vodacom have entered a strategic partnership with Amazon Leo, Amazon's low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite broadband network. The deal, finalized during the 2026 Mobile World Congress, will see Vodafone utilize Amazon’s constellation to provide "backhaul" connectivity for its mobile masts. This allows the operator to deploy 4G and 5G base stations in geographically isolated areas without the prohibitive expense or logistical delays of installing traditional fiber-optic or microwave links.
Amazon Leo is designed to deliver enterprise-grade performance, boasting download speeds of up to 1 Gbps and upload speeds of 400 Mbps. With over 200 satellites currently in orbit and a heavy-lift launch manifest of 20+ missions planned for 2026 alone, the constellation is rapidly scaling toward its initial target of 3,232 satellites. For Vodacom, this partnership is a critical pillar of its Vision 2030, which seeks to reach 260 million customers and raise smartphone penetration in Africa to 75%.
The rollout will follow a phased approach: initial deployments are scheduled to begin in Germany and other European markets later in 2026, followed by a progressive expansion across Africa through Vodacom’s footprint. Beyond expanding coverage, Vodafone plans to use the satellite link to boost network resilience. In the event of terrestrial fiber breaks or natural disasters like flooding, the satellite backhaul can serve as an immediate failover, ensuring that emergency and critical digital services remain online.
While Starlink has largely dominated the LEO space to date, the entry of Amazon Leo—rebranded from Project Kuiper in late 2025—introduces a formidable competitor. By focusing on deep integration with mobile operators and leveraging Amazon's global ground infrastructure, Amazon Leo is positioning itself as the preferred partner for "Telco-grade" space-based connectivity.
