Royal Air Maroc Secures Groundbreaking Starlink Fleet Deal in African Aviation First
Morocco’s national carrier has confirmed an agreement to equip 41 aircraft with Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service, marking a major milestone as the first African airline to introduce the satellite technology onboard. The rollout forms part of a broader push to modernize passenger services and fleet operations.
Royal Air Maroc has confirmed an agreement to bring Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service to 41 aircraft, positioning Morocco’s flag carrier to become the first African airline to offer the satellite technology onboard. Royal Air Maroc plans to begin installing Starlink internet on its fleet in early 2027. The agreement forms part of a wider upgrade of its aircraft and passenger services, signaling a major operational shift for the carrier as it seeks to enhance in-flight connectivity across its network.
Installation will proceed gradually following the announcement, which gives a firm timetable and aircraft count to the airline’s connectivity plans. Members of the airline’s Safar Flyer loyalty programme will receive free access to the service once their aircraft has been equipped. The high-speed, low-latency internet is intended to let passengers stream videos, work online and stay connected during flights, including journeys linking Casablanca with other African cities and international destinations.
Royal Air Maroc chief executive Hamid Addou stated that the agreement belongs to a wider programme covering fleet renewal, cabin improvements and passenger services. Meanwhile, Starlink executive Lauren Dreyer noted that the partnership would bring the connectivity experience already available on other continents to passengers travelling through Morocco. The move places Royal Air Maroc alongside international carriers such as Air France, which began introducing Starlink-powered Wi-Fi in 2025 ahead of equipping its entire fleet by the end of 2026.
Why This Matters
The integration of satellite-based in-flight connectivity by a major African flag carrier introduces a new competitive benchmark for aviation service standards across the continent. By linking free internet access directly to the Safar Flyer loyalty programme, Royal Air Maroc is demonstrating how airlines can bundle digital infrastructure upgrades with customer retention strategies. This commercial approach strengthens the carrier's appeal to business travelers and passengers utilizing Casablanca as a primary hub for regional and intercontinental transit.
Operationalizing low-latency satellite internet across 41 aircraft requires precise technical execution and regulatory coordination. As airlines look to match global passenger expectations, the success of this phased deployment will likely influence how other carriers on the continent approach fleet modernization and digital service delivery. Tying high-value amenities to established loyalty frameworks provides a clear template for maximizing return on operational investments in passenger experience.
Opportunities
