AfDB Approves US$400 Million Climate Finance Facility for Drought-Prone Regions

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a US$400 million climate finance facility designed to support drought resilience and agricultural sustainability in vulnerable regions across East and West Africa. The facility will focus on strengthening climate adaptation in agriculture-dependent economies, particularly in areas facing recurrent drought, water stress, and declining crop productivity. Funding is expected to support irrigation systems, climate-smart agriculture, water harvesting infrastructure, and early warning systems. With climate variability increasingly affecting food production and rural livelihoods, the new financing mechanism aims to reduce vulnerability while improving productivity and food security. The programme is also expected to support smallholder farmers through improved access to resilient farming inputs and modernised agricultural practices.
