U.S. Extends AGOA Duty-Free Trade Programme Through 2026
The United States has extended the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) through 2026, providing continued duty-free access for eligible African exports and restoring short-term certainty for exporters, investors, and trade partners across the continent.
The United States has formally extended the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) through 2026, after President Donald Trump signed legislation approving the renewal. The move preserves duty-free access to the U.S. market for eligible African exports and safeguards thousands of export-linked jobs across the continent.
AGOA has been a cornerstone of U.S.–Africa trade relations for over two decades, supporting exports in sectors such as textiles and apparel, agribusiness, manufactured goods, and automotive components. The extension offers temporary predictability for African exporters at a time of heightened global trade uncertainty and shifting supply chains.
While the renewal is shorter than previous multi-year extensions, it provides breathing room for African economies to continue leveraging preferential access to one of the world’s largest consumer markets. It also reinforces the importance of export competitiveness, compliance with standards, and value addition as African countries position themselves for future trade frameworks beyond AGOA.
For countries like Kenya, which have built export industries around AGOA access, the extension helps stabilise investor confidence and sustain momentum in export-oriented manufacturing.
Why This Matters
