KSh 16 Billion Taifa Gas Terminal at Dongo Kundu Nears 85% Completion to Become East Africa’s Largest LPG Import Hub
Signaling a transformative advancement in East Africa’s clean energy infrastructure and cross-border capital deployment, the Senate Standing Committee on Energy has inspected Taifa Gas’s KSh 16 billion Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) facility at the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone in Mombasa. Currently 85% complete and targeted for Q1 2027 commissioning, the 30,000-metric-tonne storage terminal will operate as the largest LPG import facility in the region. Complemented by 10 inland filling and collection hubs nearing completion across Kenya, the project is structured to lower household cooking gas costs, generate over 90,000 direct and indirect jobs, and solidify regional energy security.
Kenya’s clean energy transitions and downstream LPG logistics infrastructure reached a major milestone as the Senate Standing Committee on Energy conducted an oversight inspection of the KSh 16 billion Taifa Gas LPG terminal under construction at the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Mombasa County.
Led by Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kisang, the parliamentary delegation confirmed that the mega-facility is 85% complete and remains on track for operational commissioning in the first quarter of 2027. Once fully operational, the terminal will feature a cumulative storage capacity of 30,000 metric tonnes distributed across 12 spherical tanks (2,500 metric tonnes each), establishing it as the largest single LPG import and storage hub in East Africa.
The investment marks the strategic Kenya market entry for Tanzanian energy giant Taifa Gas. To ensure seamless distribution beyond the Mombasa coastal terminal, the company is concurrently constructing 10 inland filling and distribution depots—currently 60% complete—located in Kericho, Rangwe, Gilgil, Lukenya, Meru, Mariakani, Garissa, and Bungoma. The inland network will be serviced daily by road transport fleets from Mombasa, drastically reducing distribution bottlenecks for interior retail markets.
Key project parameters and statutory compliance metrics include:
Socio-Economic & Employment Impact: The development will generate approximately 200 direct technical jobs and an estimated 90,000 indirect economic opportunities, underpinned by a distribution model engaging roughly three individuals per retail cylinder transaction.
Statutory & Environmental Approvals: The terminal has secured full regulatory clearance from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), EPRA, National Construction Authority (NCA), Director of Physical Planning, and the County Government of Mombasa.
Welcoming the investment, Committee member Senator (Dr.) Boni Khalwale highlighted the project as a testament to intra-African capital deployment, driving price competition and accelerating household transitions to clean cooking fuels.
Why This Matters
For the national energy market, the Dongo Kundu Taifa Gas facility serves as an Engine for LPG Supply Chain Resilience and a Catalyst for Clean Cooking Transition. Multiplying Kenya's LPG import and bulk storage capacity breaks existing coastal import bottlenecks, lowers landed distribution costs, and ensures continuous, price-competitive cooking gas supply for industrial and domestic consumers.
From a macroeconomic perspective, the project underscores the Sovereignty of Intra-EAC Energy Infrastructure and Regional Capital COMMAND. Facilitating large-scale Tanzanian private capital into Kenya's primary Special Economic Zone proves that intra-African investment can solve critical energy deficits, displace dirty biomass fuels, and command East Africa’s energy transition on self-reliant terms.
Opportunities
B2B LPG Fleet Haulage, Tanker Transport & Bulk Logistics: High commercial demand for specialized hazardous material transport operators and fleet management providers to run daily coastal-to-inland bulk LPG routes.
Downstream LPG Cylinder Manufacturing, Smart Metering & Distribution Franchising: Substantial scope for cylinder manufacturers, IoT pay-as-you-go gas technology developers, and local entrepreneurs to secure franchise rights across the 10 regional depots.
Industrial Safety Auditing, Terminal Automation & Maintenance Engineering: Openings for mechanical engineering consultancies, safety inspectors, and industrial automation firms to provide ongoing maintenance for high-pressure storage tanks and terminal SCADA systems.
Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Value-Chain Services & Ancillary Real Estate: Project opportunities for commercial developers, warehousing firms, and technical service providers establishing operations within the Dongo Kundu SEZ perimeter.
