Kenya Accelerates Last-Mile Fiber Deployment in Keiyo South via Power Grid Infrastructure and Local Digital Hubs

Kenya’s push to decentralize digital infrastructure outside major metropolitan hubs gained operational momentum following a field inspection of connectivity projects in Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County. Led by ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, CBS, alongside Keiyo South MP Gideon Kimaiyo and representatives from Konza Technopolis, the ICT Authority, and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), the tour evaluated key last-mile assets engineered to expand participation in the digital economy.

Central to the rural infrastructure strategy is the Chepkorio Centre of Excellence Digital Hub, developed through a tri-party framework between the State Department for ICT, Konza Technopolis, and the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA). Designed as a regional technical base, the facility provides advanced ICT instruction, software engineering space, and high-speed infrastructure to support global remote work opportunities for local youth, positioning non-urban populations to access global digital labor markets.

To solve the high capital cost of rural broadband extension, the delegation tested a public Wi-Fi deployment at Nyaru Centre that utilizes existing Kenya Power distribution infrastructure for fiber aerial routing. Sharing utility poles drastically reduces civil works, trenching expenses, and deployment timelines. The resulting open-access Wi-Fi provides free internet access to traders, agricultural producers, and micro-enterprises, facilitating seamless access to e-government services, digital payment rails, and regional e-commerce marketplaces.

For the national economy, piggybacking fiber networks onto electrical grid infrastructure serves as a Catalyst for Capital-Efficient Network Expansion and an Engine for Rural Economic Integration. Reducing CAPEX barriers for broadband deployment enables rapid last-mile coverage, allowing grassroots traders and rural small businesses to digitize operations without waiting for expensive greenfield network builds.
