Historic First for Africa: World Athletics Awards 2029 World Athletics Championships to Nairobi

Global athletics history was rewritten following the 242nd World Athletics Council meeting in Budapest, Hungary, where World Athletics President Sebastian Coe formally awarded the 2029 World Athletics Championships to Nairobi. The Kenyan capital emerged victorious in a highly competitive bidding process, edging out strong competing bids from London, Rome, and Munich (which was selected to host the 2031 edition). 

The awarding of the 2029 championships represents a historic realization of Africa’s long-standing push to host the flagship biennial event. Kenya, which stands as the second-most successful nation in World Athletics Championships history, built its successful campaign on proven hosting credentials. The city previously demonstrated its organizational capacity by staging the 2017 World U18 Championships and the 2021 World U20 Championships. 

Central to Nairobi's winning proposition is the ongoing multi-billion-shilling modernization of the 48,000-capacity Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Currently undergoing upgrades ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the venue will provide world-class track, field, and broadcasting infrastructure. Coe highlighted that Kenya’s unparalleled passion for track and field—where running forms an integral part of the national identity—delivered a "compelling and emotional bid" that made hosting the event in Africa an imperative for the global growth of the sport.
