Meta Partners with African AI Accelerator This Is Digital to Launch AI Academy Kenya and Equity-Free Pitchathon

Kenya’s artificial intelligence and software engineering ecosystem received a major institutional boost following the launch of the AI Academy Kenya, a joint capacity-building initiative established by Meta and African AI accelerator This Is Digital. Formally unveiled in September 2026, the nationwide program is structured to equip 300 Kenyan students, software developers, startup founders, and career professionals with practical, market-ready AI skills.

The academy operates along two distinct operational tracks designed to bridge skills gaps and accelerate local technology commercialization. The first track features an AI Pitchathon targeting developers and early-stage founders building applications using Meta’s open-source AI technologies. Shortlisted teams will pitch live in Nairobi on October 15, 2026, competing for $5,000 in equity-free capital and a sponsored invitation to present at Meta’s global AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, in November. Applications for the Pitchathon close on September 30.

The second track consists of an intensive eight-week online AI Masterclass commencing November 3, 2026, with applications open through October 31. Led by strategy leads at This Is Digital, the curriculum moves beyond theoretical concepts to cover prompt engineering, automated workflow integration, document processing, visual storytelling, and responsible AI governance. By combining open-source tool access with localized business use cases, the initiative directly aligns with Kenya’s National AI Strategy to cultivate indigenous tech talent and retain intellectual property within home borders.
