    Accelerating cross-border digital integration across Central and East Africa, pan-African telecommunications operator Paratus Group has highlighted the activation of its 2,000-kilometer Goma-to-Mombasa (G2M) terrestrial fibre corridor at ITW Africa 2026 in Nairobi. Connecting Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) directly to subsea cable landing stations in Mombasa via Kigali, Kampala, and Nairobi, the group has complemented its live east-west backbone with the launch of Layer 2 enterprise connectivity over Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite architecture.

    Regional digital connectivity reached a vital operational milestone as Paratus Group showcased its expanded pan-African network stack during the ITW Africa 2026 summit in Nairobi. At the center of the deployment is the live 2,000-kilometer Goma-to-Mombasa (G2M) terrestrial fibre route, which establishes a continuous east-west digital bridge linking the landlocked interior of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) directly to international subsea cable systems landing along the Kenyan coast.

    Passing through key metropolitan transit hubs—including Kigali, Kampala, and Nairobi—the G2M route operates as an open multi-country terrestrial backbone rather than a single point-to-point link. By integrating direct points of presence (PoPs), internet exchange points (IXPs), and co-location data centers along the transit path, the infrastructure allows regional telecommunications operators, commercial banks, and enterprises to route cross-border traffic locally, eliminating historical reliance on circuitous legacy loops or expensive satellite backhaul.

    To complement its terrestrial assets, Paratus also introduced its enterprise-grade Layer 2 connectivity service over LEO satellite infrastructure at the Nairobi summit. Designed for organizations operating across remote sites, mining concessions, and distributed branch networks, the LEO service enables secure, private point-to-point and point-to-multipoint LAN extensions directly into centralized data hubs, delivering redundant, low-latency connectivity alongside terrestrial fibre rails.

    Why This Matters

    For the regional economy, the activation of the G2M terrestrial corridor serves as an Engine for Intra-African Digital Trade and a Catalyst for Bandwidth Cost Reduction. Providing landlocked markets in the DRC, Rwanda, and Uganda with direct, terrestrial access to high-capacity subsea cables in Mombasa drastically lowers latency, improves network uptime, and reduces wholesale transit costs for internet service providers and corporate networks operating across the East African Community (EAC).

    From a macroeconomic perspective, the integrated network stack represents the Sovereignty of Regional Data Routing and Fiber Infrastructure COMMAND. Achieving true digital autonomy requires African trade corridors to be anchored by secure, cross-border terrestrial fiber backbones and redundant satellite links. Controlling inter-state connectivity rails protects regional data traffic, hardens continental networks against subsea cable outages, and cements East Africa as the primary digital transit gateway for Central Africa on its own terms.
