DotCooperation and Forus Forge Alliance to Expand Digital Identity for African Co-operatives
DotCooperation LLC and Forus Digital Cooperative have entered a strategic partnership to expand trusted .coop digital identities across Africa. The initiative aims to integrate co-operatives into the digital economy while preserving local governance and member ownership.
DotCooperation LLC and Forus Digital Cooperative have signed a strategic partnership agreement to support the adoption of trusted .coop digital identities by co-operatives across Africa. Under the agreement, Forus is appointed DotCooperation's strategic promotional and implementation partner for the continent. The collaboration combines DotCooperation's co-operative digital identity ecosystem with Forus's co-operative network, implementation capability and technical support services. The .coop domain gives eligible co-operatives a recognisable digital identity and a dedicated online presence connected to the global co-operative movement.
Through the partnership, Forus will help co-operatives, federations, apex organisations and co-op networks understand, access and use .coop as part of their digital development. The partners emphasise that the collaboration will focus on practical adoption rather than digital identity in isolation. Activities may include co-operative outreach, awareness campaigns, webinars, conferences, onboarding support, technical assistance, digital-service integration, case studies and promotion through platforms such as WorldMap.coop and Stories.coop. Forus states that its approach connects trusted co-operative identity with practical digital participation.
Depending on the needs of each co-operative and relevant approvals, this operational scope includes member and organisation onboarding, payments, commerce, procurement, service access and connections between co-operative economies. The partnership creates a pathway from identity to trust, connection, participation and growth. The objective is to help African co-operatives become more visible, easier to discover and better positioned to participate in the digital economy while retaining their own ownership, governance and member relationships. Sector-focused case studies will demonstrate how shared digital infrastructure strengthens real, member-owned economic networks.
Forus also maintains a strategic collaboration with the World Agriculture Forum to support TerraNexus, a co-operative-led agricultural ecosystem designed to connect national apex and tertiary agri co-ops, their primary co-ops and farmer members with markets, finance, technology, services and investment. In South Africa, Forus is linked to Wealth on Wheels Connect, a digital transformation initiative developed for the Eastern Cape Transport Tertiary Co-operative, which integrates membership, digital identity, payments, connectivity, mobility, fleet operations, and commercial and financial services into a single digital ecosystem.
Why This Matters
Establishing verifiable digital identities for co-operatives across Africa addresses a foundational structural barrier in regional trade and commerce. By connecting decentralised agricultural, transport and commercial networks through shared digital infrastructure, the initiative provides a mechanism for member-owned enterprises to interface with formal financial rails and digital marketplaces. This integration strengthens operational visibility without compromising local autonomy or member governance structures.
As African markets accelerate their digital transition, ensuring that grassroots economic entities retain ownership of their data and operational workflows is critical for long-term resilience. The deployment of structured digital frameworks enables co-operatives to participate more effectively in regional commerce, reducing friction in procurement, payments and cross-border service access while reinforcing the integrity of existing member relationships.
Opportunities
- Technology Integrators: Opportunities to deploy digital-service integration, onboarding platforms and workflow automation tools tailored for co-operative networks and apex organisations.
- Financial Institutions: Commercial openings to provide digital payment rails, micro-finance and credit facilities integrated with verified co-op identity systems.
- Agricultural Contractors: Demand for supply chain, processing and value-addition infrastructure linked to co-operative-led ecosystems like TerraNexus.
- Transport Operators: Potential to adopt integrated digital identity and fleet management frameworks modelled on public transport co-operative initiatives.
