Signaling a fundamental evolution in African fintech architecture, Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga "GB" Agboola unveiled the firm's strategic expansion into banking, lending, investments, and stablecoin-powered cross-border settlements at TechCabal's Moonshot 2026 conference. Pan-African fintech leader Flutterwave is executing a major strategic pivot from a merchant payment processing gateway into a comprehensive financial operating system for African enterprises.

Speaking at TechCabal's Moonshot 2026 conference, Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga "GB" Agboola outlined the company's long-term roadmap to deepen its presence in banking services, working-capital lending, treasury management, and stablecoin-integrated cross-border transactions.

The structural pivot follows key foundation-building moves by the company in 2026, including the acquisition of open-banking API platform Mono and securing a national microfinance banking licence. Addressing the rationale behind the shift, Agboola noted that relying on partner commercial banks for transaction routing exposes payment gateways to partner downtime and operational friction. Direct control over banking and ledger infrastructure enables Flutterwave to improve system reliability, lower processing latency, and deliver unified financial products through a single dashboard.

Beyond payments, Flutterwave is leveraging its vast merchant transaction data to develop risk-assessed working-capital loans, while scaling cross-border settlement capabilities utilizing stablecoins and digital rails to help African enterprises settle international supplier invoices seamlessly.

    Why This Matters

For the digital economy, Flutterwave's evolution acts as an Engine for Embedded Enterprise Finance and a Catalyst for Cross-Border Merchant Settlement. Unifying payments, banking, credit, and FX trade into one platform removes friction for African businesses, boosting liquidity and operational resilience.

From a macroeconomic perspective, the initiative highlights the Sovereignty of Digital Financial Infrastructure and Payment Rail COMMAND. Transitioning away from fragmented traditional banking dependencies empowers African tech platforms to own the full financial stack, safeguarding cross-border commerce and driving financial self-reliance across the continent.

    Opportunities

B2B Stablecoin Settlement, FX Risk Management & Cross-Border Rails: High commercial scope for liquidity providers, digital asset advisories, and cross-border platforms to partner on stablecoin-powered supplier payment rails.

Alternative Credit Scoring, Open-Banking Integration & Risk Algorithms: Substantial demand for risk-tech developers and data analytics consultancies to build underwriting engines using Mono's open-banking data.

Enterprise ERP Integration, Treasury Tech & B2B Accounting Systems: Openings for software developers and corporate advisories to integrate Flutterwave's banking and payment APIs directly into corporate enterprise systems.

Fintech Regulatory Compliance, Risk Management & Asset Safeguarding: Project opportunities for compliance consultancies, risk auditors, and legal experts guiding full MFB banking regulation and consumer deposit protection.

Commerce, Strategy, and Sovereignty — Extractions, Insights, and Impact.
