The KenGen Board of Directors has formally confirmed the appointment of Ronoh Kibet Charles as the incoming Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the state-backed electricity generator. Kibet will officially take over the substantive office on February 1, 2027, stepping into the leadership role following the retirement of outgoing CEO Eng. Peter Waweru Njenga. The announcement sets in motion a structured transition period designed to guarantee an orderly handover of responsibilities. This careful phasing aims to preserve institutional continuity across the state generator as it pursues its established corporate and operational objectives.
Kibet brings more than 17 years of extensive industry experience to the position, spanning geothermal energy development, commercial strategy, project execution, and business development. He currently holds the role of KenGen General Manager for Commercial Services. In this capacity, his responsibilities include overseeing energy markets and investments, new business ventures, corporate partnerships, marketing, and corporate communications. His portfolio also covers crucial sustainability initiatives, notably the Olkaria Green Energy Park as well as ongoing international consultancy expansions.
His academic and professional credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Telecommunication and Information Engineering alongside a Master of Science in Project Management, both earned from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Furthermore, he has completed executive education programs across institutions such as Harvard Business School, IESE Business School, Strathmore Business School, and the University of Cape Town. He is a certified Project Management Professional, an SAP Project System Consultant, and holds the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya. He maintains active professional memberships with the Engineers Board of Kenya, the Institution of Engineers of Kenya, and the Geothermal Association of Kenya.
Why This Matters
Leadership transitions at critical state-owned enterprises like KenGen carry immense weight for national infrastructure stability and regional energy security. As the primary power generator in the country, KenGen underpins industrial output and commercial expansion, making executive continuity vital for ongoing capital projects and long-term energy planning. A structured handover period mitigates operational disruption, ensuring that large-scale initiatives such as geothermal development and international consultancy expansions continue without strategic drift. For investors and policy makers, a predictable leadership pipeline reinforces confidence in the governance and operational execution of key state utilities.
The integration of deep technical expertise and commercial acumen at the highest level of management shapes how state generators navigate evolving market demands. With responsibilities encompassing new business ventures and sustainability projects like the Olkaria Green Energy Park, executive leadership directly influences the country’s broader transition toward reliable and sustainable power sources. Maintaining steady oversight during succession safeguards institutional knowledge, protects long-term infrastructure investments, and sustains stakeholder trust across the regional energy ecosystem.
