Anglo American Platinum, commonly known as Amplats, has officially unveiled a 5MW cogeneration power plant situated at its Waterval Smelting Complex in Rustenburg, South Africa. Valued at US $10.63m, the facility represents a major engineering milestone aimed at capturing waste heat from an existing conversion plant that was already generating 3.2MW of power. This infrastructure development introduces an advanced approach to energy efficiency within the heavy industrial and mining sectors.

The project was commissioned by project developer Vuselela Energy alongside equity provider H1 Holdings. Operating under the name Eternity Power, the installation stands as South Africa's first thermal harvesting power plant dedicated to Amplats. According to July Ndlovu, the Executive Head of Process for Amplats, the innovative technology deployed within the cogeneration plant provides vital solutions to ongoing energy challenges faced by energy-intensive operations like smelting, which traditionally consume vast amounts of electricity.

Developers of the facility have highlighted the installation as a world first. Its direct connection to the converter at a metallurgical smelter marks a notable technical innovation in industrial energy recovery. By converting previously wasted thermal output into usable electricity, the plant establishes a consistent presence of clean, sustainable, and reliable energy directly at the point of heavy industrial consumption, shifting operational paradigms for high-output processing complexes.

    Why This Matters

Heavy industrial operations across Southern Africa frequently confront severe constraints regarding reliable grid capacity and rising power tariffs. By integrating thermal harvesting directly into metallurgical smelting complexes, industrial operators can unlock internal efficiencies that reduce reliance on external grid infrastructure. This technical integration addresses operational resilience at the facility level, mitigating the vulnerability of heavy manufacturing and processing plants to broader power supply fluctuations.

The deployment of innovative cogeneration models by private developers and equity providers demonstrates how alternative financing and project structuring can address industrial energy deficits. Projects executed through partnerships between mining houses, specialized developers, and equity holders provide a replicable framework for heavy industries seeking to optimize energy usage, lower operational overheads, and advance sustainability mandates without depending entirely on state-led utility expansions.

    Opportunities

    • Industrial Contractors: Opportunities to bid for specialized engineering, procurement, and construction contracts involving high-temperature heat exchangers and metallurgical integration.
    • Energy Developers: Commercial openings to originate and structure similar waste-heat recovery projects across other energy-intensive smelting and mining operations in the region.
    • Equipment Suppliers: Direct supply mandates for advanced thermal harvesting hardware, specialized turbines, and heavy-duty monitoring systems tailored for smelter environments.
    • Private Equity: Investment prospects in backing specialized energy generation firms and independent power producers focusing on industrial efficiency and cogeneration assets.
