
Safaricom and Meta Anchor Kenya's Subsea Expansion Ahead of 2027
Safaricom and Meta are anchoring a massive expansion of Kenya's internet capacity by bringing two major subsea cables to Mombasa before 2027. This infrastructure injection aims to meet soaring demand for artificial intelligence workloads and enterprise cloud computing while transforming regional digital connectivity.
Kenya is aggressively cementing its position as the digital epicenter of East Africa as two massive international submarine fibre-optic cables schedule landings in Mombasa before 2027. This infrastructure injection arrives as the nation faces surging exponential demand for artificial intelligence workloads, enterprise cloud computing, and high-definition streaming services. According to global telecom research firm TeleGeography, the centerpiece of this expansion is the USD 23 million Daraja subsea cable. The 4,108-kilometre infrastructure project represents a strategic partnership between Meta and Kenyan telecom giant Safaricom. Fully funded by Meta subsidiary Edge Network Services and constructed by Alcatel Submarine Networks, the Daraja system will directly connect Salalah in Oman to Mombasa.
Following closely behind Daraja is the Africa-1 submarine system, slated to reach Kenyan shores next year. The Africa-1 cable is an expansive network stretching from France, weaving through Africa, and extending into the Middle East. Together, these two cables will radically enhance Kenya routing options, circumventing the congested and geopolitically volatile Red Sea corridor. The impending arrival of these cables builds upon an already robust national network. Data from the Communications Authority of Kenya reveals that the country available international internet bandwidth surged to 28,130 Gigabits per second during the first quarter of 2026, representing a 16.4 percent growth trajectory. The largest immediate capacity increase was driven by SEACOM.
Crucially, telecom operators are provisioning capacity aggressively ahead of actual consumption. While available bandwidth grew by 16.4 percent, utilized bandwidth increased by only 3 percent. This deliberate over-provisioning is a tactical necessity to prevent network congestion as data centers scale up to accommodate artificial intelligence-driven traffic. Mobile broadband subscriptions climbed to 52.9 million, while mobile data consumption exceeded 800 million Gigabytes in the first quarter of 2026. For Safaricom, the Daraja cable represents far more than just increased bandwidth. It marks a fundamental structural evolution as the telco acts as the local landing partner and operates the cable segment within Kenyan territorial waters.
