Tower Firm Atlas to Build 300 New Sites in Sh7.4 Billion Expansion Plan
Telecommunications infrastructure firm Atlas Towers Kenya has announced a Sh7.4 billion ($57 million) investment to construct 300 new towers across the country. The move is set to significantly bolster Kenya’s 4G and 5G penetration while pioneering a shift toward solar-powered, "green" infrastructure to lower operational costs and carbon footprints.
Atlas Towers Kenya is accelerating its footprint in the East African market with a massive capital injection of Sh7.4 billion. The firm plans to deploy 300 additional telecommunications towers over the next 24 months, bringing its total site count to over 1,200. This expansion is designed to meet the skyrocketing demand for data as mobile network operators (MNOs) like Safaricom and Airtel aggressively roll out 5G services in urban centers and extend 4G coverage to underserved rural corridors.
A defining feature of this new investment is the commitment to sustainability. Atlas has confirmed that a significant portion of the new sites will utilize solar-hybrid power systems. By integrating high-capacity lithium-ion batteries and solar arrays, the firm aims to reduce its reliance on diesel generators, which have historically been the primary power source for off-grid towers. This shift not only aligns with global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards but also protects the firm against the current volatility in global fuel prices.
Why this matters
For the "Silicon Savannah," this infrastructure boost is the backbone of the digital economy. Reliable tower networks are essential for the success of initiatives like Starlink Mobile and M-PESA's privacy-focused enhancements, which rely on robust signals to process transactions. Furthermore, the move to solar-powered towers de-risks the telecommunications sector from the "fuel shocks" currently affecting Vivo and Shell stations, ensuring that connectivity remains uninterrupted even during energy crises.
Opportunity sector
Green Energy Solutions: Massive demand for local firms providing industrial-grade solar panels, lithium-ion storage, and smart energy management systems.
Civil Engineering & Construction: Local contractors will find opportunities in the site acquisition, foundation laying, and structural assembly of the 300 new towers.
Network Maintenance: Growth in specialized maintenance services for hybrid power systems and remote monitoring technologies.
Real Estate & Land Leasing: Opportunities for landowners in strategic "high-traffic" or "rural-gap" areas to secure long-term lease agreements with infrastructure firms.
