Former Absa Bank Kenya chief executive Abdi Mohamed has officially assumed office as the head of I&M Bank Kenya. His appointment follows the receipt of necessary regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Kenya. Mr Mohamed took over his new responsibilities on Monday, October 5, and will lead the lender's Kenya business with a specific focus on deepening customer relationships, driving commercial growth, and steering the institution through its ongoing digital transformation initiatives.

Mr Mohamed succeeds Kihara Maina, who had been serving as the interim chief executive for the lender. Following this transition, Mr Maina returns to his primary executive responsibilities as the regional chief executive of I&M Group. In welcoming the new executive, I&M Group executive director Sarit Raja Shah noted that the board is confident in Mr Mohamed's extensive banking experience, strong leadership credentials, and deep understanding of the financial services landscape in Kenya and the broader region.

Prior to taking over at I&M Bank Kenya, Mr Mohamed served as the country chief executive and managing director at Absa Bank Kenya. He brings more than three decades of experience in the banking and financial services sector to his new role. Commenting on his appointment, Mr Mohamed stated that he is deeply honored to join an institution with a strong heritage, talented workforce, and established customer relationships, adding that he looks forward to working closely with the team and partners.

Beyond his executive corporate roles, Mr Mohamed maintains prominent positions within the regional financial and business ecosystem. He chairs the UN Global Compact Network Kenya and sits on the governing council of the Kenya Bankers Association. Additionally, he serves as a board member of Integrated Payment Services Limited, the operator of the PesaLink interbank transfer platform, as well as Touch Health, positioning him at the intersection of banking, national payments infrastructure, and technology governance.

    Why This Matters

Executive transitions at systemic financial institutions carry direct implications for regional banking strategies, governance standards, and operational execution. As commercial banks across East Africa navigate shifting regulatory environments and the acceleration of digital financial services, leadership appointments at this level shape how institutions allocate capital, manage risk, and execute digital transformation strategies. Mr Mohamed brings decades of sector experience into an institution that operates across multiple jurisdictions, highlighting the competitive movement of top executive talent among Tier-1 lenders in the region.

Furthermore, leadership continuity tied to regional holding structures allows financial groups to harmonize operations across different markets. With I&M Group operating subsidiaries in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Mauritius, executive movements at the core Kenyan operating unit influence broader regional integration. The alignment between retail banking operations, national payment systems such as PesaLink, and corporate governance frameworks remains critical as lenders scale their digital offerings while maintaining rigorous compliance with central bank expectations.

    Opportunities

    • Corporate Lenders and Financiers: Engage with I&M Bank Kenya under its new leadership to structure syndicated debt and trade finance facilities aimed at expanding regional commercial operations.
    • Technology Integrators: Pitch advanced digital banking architecture and data security solutions to support the bank's stated push into digital-first operational models.
    • Payment Infrastructure Providers: Collaborate with institutional platforms and bank-backed networks like PesaLink to enhance interoperability and transaction efficiency.
    • Compliance and Risk Consultancies: Offer advisory services to financial institutions navigating evolving regulatory frameworks set by the Central Bank of Kenya and regional regulators.
