Afriex, a cross-border payments infrastructure company processing more than $600 million in annual payment volume, has announced a new sponsor and settlement banking partnership with Global Innovations Bank. The relationship strengthens the banking foundation behind the Afriex B2B PaymentsAPI, enabling faster settlement, expanded regulatory support, and Global USD Account access for businesses moving money across more than 35 countries. Originally founded as a consumer remittance company, Afriex has evolved into a global payments infrastructure platform powering cross-border payouts for remittance providers, payroll companies, ecommerce platforms, fintechs, banks, and other financial institutions.

The company's API combines licensed local payment rails with global banking connectivity, enabling businesses to launch and scale international payment products without building local infrastructure themselves. The Global Innovations Bank relationship is the latest milestone in the strategic expansion of a global banking network that combines local market expertise with international settlement capabilities. Together with existing banking partners including Choice Bank in Kenya and United Bank for Africa in Nigeria, Afriex is creating regulated financial infrastructure designed to enable businesses to move money seamlessly across emerging markets as demand for reliable cross-border payment operations continues to grow.

Under the agreement, which became effective in Q2 2026, Global Innovations Bank will provide sponsor and settlement banking services. The arrangement delivers faster settlement across supported payment corridors, Global USD Account access, expanded banking and regulatory coverage supporting licensed money movement, and greater operational resilience as transaction volumes scale. According to Tope Alabi, Founder and CEO of Afriex, the partnership focuses on building the banking foundation that makes every transaction faster, more reliable, and easier for customers to scale. Alex Goody, Chief Product Officer at Global Innovations Bank, noted that the disciplined compliance program and strong technical infrastructure of Afriex align with their objective to support high-impact fintech scaling.

The partnership also lays the groundwork for additional treasury, foreign exchange, and global account capabilities that Afriex plans to introduce over the coming year. With banking partnerships now spanning the United States, Nigeria, Kenya, and other strategic markets, Afriex continues to expand the regulated banking network supporting its global payment platform. As cross-border commercial activity accelerates, building resilient underlying banking rails remains a central priority for financial technology firms seeking to maintain compliance and operational continuity across multiple jurisdictions.

    Why This Matters

Robust sponsor and settlement banking relationships form the operational bedrock of modern cross-border financial architecture. By integrating Global Innovations Bank into its network alongside institutions like Choice Bank and United Bank for Africa, Afriex addresses the complex regulatory and liquidity hurdles that traditionally constrain money movement across emerging markets. This multi-jurisdictional banking foundation minimizes reliance on fragmented intermediary networks, directly targeting the high costs and settlement delays that hinder international commerce for African enterprises and global partners alike.

Furthermore, secure global USD account access and expanded regulatory coverage mitigate critical operational and currency risks for businesses operating across more than 35 countries. As regulatory scrutiny intensifies globally, aligning with established banking partners equipped with firsthand experience in cross-border mechanics ensures that transaction scaling does not outpace compliance. This structural resilience protects end users, enhances data and financial integrity, and provides a stable framework for future treasury and foreign exchange innovations.

    Opportunities

    • Fintech Operators: Utilize the enhanced B2B PaymentsAPI to launch international payout and collection products without investing in localized banking infrastructure.
    • Regional Banks: Explore integration models with global infrastructure providers to extend cross-border reach and liquidity management for corporate clients.
    • Enterprise Treasurers: Leverage upcoming foreign exchange and global account capabilities to streamline multi-currency cash management across emerging markets.
    • Compliance Integrators: Partner with regulated platforms to build automated verification and monitoring layers suited for multi-country payment flows.
