Murang’a Avocado Waste Valorization: Turning Bio-Waste into Green Gold

Announced on April 28, 2026, the Murang’a Avocado Waste Valorization Drive addresses a critical inefficiency in the horticultural value chain. Currently, up to 25% of the avocado harvest in Murang’a is lost to post-harvest damage or discarded during processing (seeds and peels). The new legislative and investment framework incentivizes the establishment of "Bio-Refineries"—specialized facilities that use cold-press and thermal conversion technologies to extract avocado butter for cosmetics and polyphenols for the food preservative market. Furthermore, the initiative integrates Biogas technology, where the remaining fibrous pulp is processed in anaerobic digesters to produce clean cooking gas and nutrient-rich organic manure for local farmers. This "closed-loop" system not only reduces the environmental burden of rotting waste in marketplaces but also provides farmers with a secondary revenue stream. By 2027, the county aims to process 50,000 metric tons of waste annually, positioning Murang’a as a regional leader in sustainable "Agro-Industrialization."
