    Airtel Africa and Elon Musk's Starlink have officially launched a satellite-to-phone service in the Democratic Republic of Congo, marking what the companies describe as the first commercial deployment of direct-to-cell technology on the African continent. Rolled out on 14 August 2026, the service allows eligible Airtel customers using compatible Android smartphones to connect directly to Starlink satellites in areas where conventional mobile networks are unavailable. The initial offering supports essential communications including SMS and selected light-data applications such as WhatsApp messaging. Airtel plans to systematically expand this technology across its fourteen African markets, pending necessary regulatory approvals in each jurisdiction.

    Unlike traditional satellite internet deployments, customers do not need to purchase, transport or install dedicated satellite dishes or terminals. Instead, compatible mobile devices connect directly to low-Earth orbit satellites that function as mobile phone towers in space. The rollout follows a significant regulatory shift in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Congolese authorities previously prohibited Starlink operations over security concerns regarding armed groups in the eastern region. That stance changed on 2 May 2025, when the Congolese Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority granted a proper telecommunications network and services licence to Starlink DRC SA, clearing the path for conventional broadband and now this direct-to-cell infrastructure.

    Airtel Africa Chief Executive Officer Sunil Taldar noted that combining the operator's existing terrestrial network with SpaceX satellite technology extends essential connectivity beyond the limits of conventional mobile infrastructure. Airtel DRC Chief Executive Officer Thierry Diasonama emphasized that the vast size and challenging geography of the country leave many citizens living and working outside the reach of standard telecommunications masts. The service is initially accessible on LTE Android smartphones with support for Apple devices forthcoming. Users require an active data bundle or roaming enabled, with registration handled through the MyAirtel application, which grants an introductory thirty-day free trial period before standard bundle integration takes effect.
