Invest Kenya Launches $700 Million Waste Management Prospectus: Turning Waste into a 2030 GDP Driver

Invest Kenya, in collaboration with Systemiq, ALN Kenya, and TakaTaka Ni Mali, has launched a landmark investment prospectus titled "Waste Management and Circular Economy: Investment Pathways and Opportunities in Kenya." Unveiled at KIICO 2026, the strategic document identifies a $700 million (approx. KSh 91 billion) economic pipeline that could contribute 0.5% to Kenya’s GDP by 2030 through specialized private sector investment.

The new prospectus arrives as a critical intervention for a country that generates 22,000 tonnes of waste daily, yet currently recycles only 4%. The roadmap reframes this environmental challenge as a bankable economic frontier, highlighting five key sectors: Packaging (Plastics), E-waste, Textiles, Organics (Agri-waste), and Construction. The initiative is underpinned by recent legislative milestones, including the Sustainable Waste Management Act (2022) and the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Regulations gazetted in late 2024. These laws shift the financial burden of waste management to manufacturers and importers, creating a guaranteed demand for circular economy services. To accelerate this transition, Invest Kenya CEO John Mwendwa confirmed the establishment of a Project Preparation Facility to turn raw waste concepts into "bankable" deals, supported by blended finance and risk-sharing guarantees for international and local investors. Why this matters For the broader economy, this move signifies the birth of a formalized "Green Industrial" sector. By recovering materials that are currently lost in landfills, Kenya can reduce its reliance on imported raw materials for manufacturing, thereby saving foreign exchange. For the labor market, the prospectus estimates the circular economy could create thousands of "dignified" jobs in collection, sorting, and high-tech recycling, positioning Kenya as a regional hub for sustainable material processing within the EAC. Opportunity sector Plastic & Packaging Recycling: Huge demand for large-scale "wash-and-flake" plants and pelletizing facilities to meet new EPR compliance targets for consumer goods companies. E-waste Recovery: Opportunities for specialized firms to extract precious metals and components from the growing volume of discarded electronics and mobile devices. Organic Waste-to-Energy: High potential for ventures converting municipal and agricultural waste into biogas, briquettes, or organic fertilizers for the local market. Traceability & ESG Tech: A rising market for digital platforms (like Ecomali) that provide waste-tracking data required for corporate sustainability reporting and regulatory audits.
