Kenya Opens Talks with Spain to Boost Infrastructure and Energy Cooperation

The Government of Kenya has opened formal discussions with Spain aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation and increasing Spanish engagement in Kenya’s infrastructure development agenda. Talks held at the National Treasury centred on accelerating progress on key energy projects, including the strategic Lessos–Tororo 400kV transmission line. The cross-border electricity interconnector is designed to enhance regional power trade and improve grid stability within East Africa. The transmission line, once fully operational, is expected to strengthen electricity exchange between Kenya and neighbouring countries, supporting more efficient energy distribution and enabling surplus power to move across borders. This aligns with East Africa’s broader objective of creating a more integrated regional power pool. Energy infrastructure remains central to Kenya’s economic growth model. Expanding transmission capacity not only improves domestic reliability but also positions the country as a regional energy hub capable of facilitating cross-border electricity trade. Spanish participation could bring financing, technical expertise and project management capacity, particularly as Kenya continues to attract international partnerships to bridge infrastructure funding gaps.
