Kenya Set to Export Select Products Tax-Free to China Under New Trade Deal

Kenya is expected to sign a new trade agreement with China within the next 30 days that will grant duty-free, quota-free (DFQF) access for select Kenyan products to the Chinese market. The move is expected to significantly boost agricultural exports and strengthen Kenya’s trade position with one of the world’s largest economies. Speaking during an interview on NTV, Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui confirmed that the agreement will allow Kenyan farmers to export qualifying products to China at zero tariffs, removing a major cost barrier to market entry. The deal is part of Kenya’s broader export diversification strategy aimed at reducing reliance on traditional markets and improving the country’s trade balance. China remains one of Kenya’s largest trading partners, but trade has historically been skewed in China’s favour. The DFQF arrangement is expected to help correct this imbalance by improving competitiveness for Kenyan agricultural and value-added products. Once signed, the agreement is expected to unlock new demand for Kenyan produce, improve foreign exchange earnings, and encourage greater investment in export-oriented agriculture and processing.
