Sidama Parks Corporation and Basilea Secure Investment to Launch Yirgalem Avocado Processing Facility
The Sidama Industrial Parks Development Corporation has signed an investment agreement with Basilea Trading One Member PLC to establish an avocado processing facility at the Yirgalem Integrated Agro-Industrial Park. Led by diaspora investor Bekalu Getahun, the project marks a strategic push into value-added agricultural exports for Ethiopia.
The Sidama Industrial Parks Development Corporation has signed an investment agreement with Basilea Trading One Member PLC to establish an avocado processing facility at the Yirgalem Integrated Agro-Industrial Park. The project, led by diaspora investor Bekalu Getahun, has completed its preparatory requirements with the Ethiopian Investment Commission and entered the implementation phase. Once operational, the facility is expected to process up to 150 tonnes of raw avocados per day, with plans to export up to six containers of processed products to international markets each month. This strategic move aims to transform raw horticultural output into higher-margin export goods.
Avocado processing converts raw fruit into items with a longer shelf life and significantly higher value than fresh exports. The simplest form is pulp, used by food manufacturers and restaurants, while more advanced processing yields refined avocado oil for cooking and cosmetics. Additionally, by-products can be converted into animal feed. Each stage captures more economic value from the same tonne of fruit and reduces waste generated by produce that fails to meet fresh export standards. However, the supply side remains a central determinant of the project's long-term operational viability across the region.
According to the corporation, the company plans to enter into agreements with local avocado growers to secure essential raw materials. Processing 150 tonnes per day requires consistent daily volumes that individual smallholders cannot supply alone, making aggregation through cooperatives or contract farming arrangements vital. Ethiopia's avocado sector remains underdeveloped relative to Kenya and Tanzania, meaning the plant may need to actively help build grower capacity rather than simply purchase existing output. The employment impact spans permanent roles in processing, quality control, and logistics alongside temporary positions during the harvest and peak season.
At Yirgalem Park, the facility adds an anchor tenant that could attract related investment in cold storage, packaging, and transport infrastructure that also benefits other agricultural tenants. Furthermore, the corporation plans to expand operations by processing refined avocado oil, manufacturing cosmetics from avocado by-products, and producing animal feed for domestic and export markets. This trajectory aligns closely with the value-addition model common in mature avocado industries, where oil and cosmetics command substantially higher commercial margins than basic pulp or fresh fruit can achieve in global markets.
Why This Matters
The establishment of this processing facility represents a pivotal shift from raw commodity export to domestic agro-industrial value addition in East Africa. By integrating local smallholders through structured agreements, the initiative addresses the critical upstream supply chain challenge of consistent volume aggregation. This operational model not only mitigates post-harvest losses from substandard fresh fruit exports but also establishes a localized industrial ecosystem capable of supporting ancillary sectors such as packaging, transport, and cold storage infrastructure.
Scaling agro-processing within the Yirgalem Integrated Agro-Industrial Park enhances Ethiopia's competitive standing in regional agricultural trade, positioning local producers to capture higher margins in international markets. As the facility expands into refined oils and cosmetics, the broader economic impact extends to employment creation and foreign exchange generation. Success will ultimately hinge on the sustained capacity of Ethiopian growers to maintain year-round supply commitments under formal contract farming frameworks.
Opportunities
- Contract Farming Coordinators: Build and manage structured aggregation networks with local smallholder cooperatives to guarantee the required daily volume of 150 tonnes of raw avocados.
- Cold Chain Logisticians: Develop and operate temperature-controlled storage and transport infrastructure within and around the Yirgalem Integrated Agro-Industrial Park to support export logistics.
- Equipment Integrators: Supply and maintain specialized machinery for advanced processing lines dedicated to avocado oil extraction, cosmetic manufacturing, and animal feed production.
- Market Expansion Financiers: Provide trade finance and working capital solutions tailored to support diaspora-led agro-industrial investments and export-oriented manufacturing facilities.
