KenGen Onboards Fourth Investor at Olkaria Green Energy Park
KenGen has officially signed Synergetic Development Group as the fourth anchor tenant for its Green Energy Park in Olkaria, Naivasha. This agreement marks a significant expansion of the geothermal-powered industrial zone, introducing specialized steel fabrication and logistics to the park’s growing green manufacturing ecosystem.
The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has reached a new milestone in its industrialization agenda by onboarding its fourth major investor at the Olkaria Green Energy Park. The newest partner, Synergetic Development Group, has committed to a long-term lease and will utilize 18 MW of geothermal power and 360 cubic meters of water annually. The investor plans to set up an integrated logistics hub for steel products and a fabrication center, leveraging the park’s competitive green energy tariffs.
The signing underscores the growing momentum of the 342-hectare Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Synergetic Development Group joins an elite list of early movers, which includes a $1 billion data center collaboration between Microsoft and G42, an electric vehicle assembly plant by Aquilastor, and a green fertilizer project with China’s Kaishan Group. This latest addition is expected to create 150 direct jobs and significantly strengthen the local manufacturing supply chain.
Why this matters
The rapid occupancy of the Olkaria Green Energy Park demonstrates that "Green Manufacturing" is now a viable commercial reality in East Africa. By locating energy-intensive industries like steel fabrication directly at the source of geothermal power, the project reduces the "grid-loss" costs and carbon footprint associated with traditional industrial zones. This success reinforces Naivasha’s position as a strategic industrial heart for the region and provides a blueprint for decarbonizing the continent's manufacturing sector.
Opportunity sector
Steel & Construction Supply Chains: The new fabrication center will provide a localized source of green steel products, reducing reliance on expensive imports for regional infrastructure projects.
Industrial Support Services: Increased demand for technical maintenance, industrial safety, and logistics providers to service the growing cluster of factories in Olkaria.
Renewable Energy Consulting: Opportunities for firms that can help industrial tenants optimize their use of the "direct-wire" geothermal power and steam.
Real Estate & Hospitality: The influx of skilled labor and international investors into Naivasha will continue to drive demand for residential and commercial spaces.
