Meta and Nigerian Ministry Unveil AI Academy Backed by Startup Funding

Meta has joined forces with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to launch AI Academy Nigeria, a national capacity building initiative designed to strengthen the country's artificial intelligence talent pipeline. The partnership leverages the 3 Million Technical Talent programme, the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria. Announced by the partners, the programme delivers practical technical learning, startup support, and structured pathways for developers, students, and early career professionals.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, stated that the initiative equips developers, entrepreneurs, and young professionals with practical skills while creating pathways for innovation and globally competitive startups. He emphasized that the partnership reflects the government commitment to public private collaboration and positioning Nigeria as a leader in Africa's digital economy. Sade Dada, Head of Public Policy, Anglophone West Africa at Meta, noted that Nigerian talent requires greater access to practical training, funding, and platforms to build impactful solutions that can scale from local markets to regional platforms.

Dr. Olushola Ayoola, Founder and CEO of RAIN, highlighted that building national capacity requires coordinated efforts among government, technology companies, and local innovation organizations. The programme operates through three distinct tracks, namely AI Skills Development, an AI Startup Pitchathon, and a six week Developer Bootcamp. Applications for the pitchathon close on August 21, 2026, after which ten startups will be shortlisted to pitch at GITEX Nigeria on September 3. Two winning ventures will each receive $5,000 in cash funding, $2,000 in Meta advertising credits, and an all expenses paid trip to represent Nigeria at the AI Summit by Meta in Istanbul, Türkiye, in November 2026.

The launch arrives alongside recent findings from Google and the World Bank highlighting Nigeria's rapid adoption of artificial intelligence. A report by Google, developed in partnership with Ipsos and titled Our Life with AI, indicates that Nigeria is emerging as a global leader in artificial intelligence adoption across learning, work, and entrepreneurship. Furthermore, the World Bank World Development Report 2026 placed Nigeria alongside Kenya as African nations experiencing a sharp rise in business artificial intelligence use, putting formal business adoption on par with the United States over the past three years.
