Communications Authority to Roll Out Cloud-Based ID-to-SIM Verification System
The Communications Authority of Kenya is set to deploy a cloud-based ID-to-SIM verification platform that will allow users to check which phone numbers are registered under their identification documents via SMS.
The Communications Authority of Kenya has announced plans to introduce a cloud-based ID-to-SIM verification system designed to enhance oversight, transparency and consumer protection within the telecommunications sector.
The platform will enable individuals to confirm, via SMS, which mobile numbers are registered under their national identification documents. The system will integrate all licensed mobile network operators in Kenya, ensuring a unified and centralised verification framework.
The move comes amid continued efforts to strengthen SIM registration compliance, reduce identity misuse and enhance accountability within the mobile ecosystem. By consolidating data across operators, the system is expected to handle high query volumes while generating detailed audit trails for regulatory oversight.
Enhanced encryption protocols, access controls and monitoring tools will be embedded into the system to safeguard sensitive user data and maintain data integrity. The cloud-based architecture also allows for scalability as mobile penetration and subscriber numbers continue to grow.
Kenya’s mobile sector plays a foundational role in digital payments, fintech, e-commerce and public service delivery. As mobile connectivity becomes increasingly intertwined with financial systems and digital identity frameworks, strengthening SIM verification mechanisms becomes critical for cybersecurity and fraud prevention.
The initiative reflects broader regulatory alignment with digital governance, data protection standards and consumer protection frameworks as Kenya continues to expand its digital economy infrastructure.
