Kenya and Italy Deepen Digital Economy Cooperation in High-Level Talks

The Italian Ambassador to Kenya, Vincenzo Del Monaco, paid a courtesy call to the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo Gitau, at the Ministry headquarters, where the two leaders held discussions aimed at deepening Kenya–Italy bilateral relations with a strong focus on the digital economy. The meeting explored strategic pathways for collaboration in ICT development, digital infrastructure, and emerging technologies, reflecting the growing importance of digital transformation in Kenya’s economic agenda. Both sides highlighted the long-standing partnership between Kenya and Italy, which has delivered landmark outcomes over the years. A key reference point in the discussions was the Luigi Broglio Malindi Space Centre, a flagship symbol of Kenya–Italy cooperation that has provided a framework for collaboration in the peaceful use of outer space for scientific, technological, and socio-economic development. Building on this legacy, the two leaders explored opportunities to advance digital initiatives under the government’s Digital Superhighway and Creative Economy Pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Priority areas included the development of modern ICT infrastructure, fast-tracking the rollout of 100,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable, and expanding digital skills programmes to support a future-ready workforce. The talks also focused on collaboration in the establishment of data centres, leveraging emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), strengthening cross-border data flows, and enhancing the telecommunications sector. These areas were identified as critical to positioning Kenya as a regional digital hub while creating opportunities for technology transfer and private-sector investment. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation and pursuing mutually beneficial partnerships between Kenyan and Italian institutions and businesses to accelerate the growth of the digital landscape.
