AfCFTA Secretariat and All Africa Intellectual Property Summit Partner for Nairobi Event

The African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat and the All Africa Intellectual Property Summit have formally announced plans to stage the 7th All Africa Intellectual Property Summit in Nairobi, Kenya. Scheduled to run from November 11 to November 13, 2026, the event is organised under the theme of mainstreaming intellectual property for Africa trade, industrial, and creative economy transformation. This collaboration marks a concerted push to embed robust intellectual property mechanics into the broader architecture of intra-African commerce, industrialisation, and innovation.

This development arrives on the heels of notable regulatory progress achieved earlier in the year. During the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in February 2026, leaders approved eight of the nine Annexes under the AfCFTA Protocol on Intellectual Property Rights. The adopted texts span utility models, traditional knowledge, genetic resources, plant variety protection, patents, marks, industrial designs, geographical indications, and copyright. According to H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, translating these legal instruments into practical commercial opportunities remains the primary mandate for the continent.

The three-day summit will convene a diverse constituency of policymakers, intellectual property institutions, private sector operators, innovators, creators, academia, investors, and development partners. The agenda combines high-level policy dialogue with technical sessions addressing intellectual property commercialisation, technology transfer, and the expansion of creative industries. By contributing the continental trade perspective, the AfCFTA Secretariat aims to anchor these discussions firmly within the ongoing execution of the broader single market project, ensuring that intangible assets drive enterprise competitiveness across regions.
