Kenya Phases Out Low-End Devices with Mandatory Type-C and Quality Standards
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has issued a directive mandating USB Type-C as the universal charging standard for all mobile devices sold in the country. Beyond harmonizing charging ports, the new guidelines introduce strict minimum performance and safety thresholds, effectively phasing out low-end, sub-standard "feature phones" that fail to meet modern digital requirements.
In a significant regulatory shift aimed at reducing electronic waste and enhancing consumer safety, the Communications Authority of Kenya has announced new technical specifications for all mobile devices entering the Kenyan market. The most prominent change is the mandatory adoption of the USB Type-C charging port, aligning Kenya with global standards recently adopted by the European Union. This move is expected to simplify the user experience and significantly reduce the environmental impact caused by the proliferation of incompatible proprietary chargers.
However, the directive goes beyond the physical port. The CA has introduced "Minimum Performance and Safety Thresholds" that include requirements for battery longevity, electromagnetic compatibility, and minimum processing capabilities. These standards are specifically designed to weed out "counterfeit" and "sub-standard" low-end devices that often flood the market. By enforcing these thresholds, the government is effectively ensuring that all devices sold in Kenya are capable of supporting modern digital services, including secure mobile money transactions and 4G/5G connectivity.
