Electric mobility firm BasiGo has launched a premium electric scheduled transit pilot aimed at transforming Nairobi’s commuter experience, particularly for the city’s growing professional workforce. The initiative integrates mid-sized electric buses into existing matatu Sacco networks, signalling a shift from simply supplying electric vehicles to building structured, data-driven public transport solutions. The pilot introduces fixed-route, non-stop services connecting residential estates such as Nyayo Estate and Mwiki to major commercial hubs including Westlands and Upper Hill. The goal is to bridge the predictability gap that often pushes professionals toward private cars. Through its digital Jani booking platform, BasiGo aggregates commuter demand, pre-sells seats and deploys buses based on real-time data insights rather than traditional informal route estimation. This approach brings scheduling discipline to a historically fragmented transport ecosystem. Fares ranging between KES 150 and 200 position the service at a premium compared to conventional diesel matatus. However, the value proposition focuses on efficiency, comfort and time savings. Direct routes are designed to reduce commute times by up to 40 minutes, making the service competitive with private vehicles and ride-hailing platforms such as Uber and Bolt. Early adoption trends indicate strong uptake among corporate employees, who account for approximately 90 percent of current riders.
