President Ruto Launches KSh 5.5 Billion Voi–Taveta Railway Revival

The revival of this century-old railway line, originally built during World War I, is a cornerstone of the government's strategy to enhance regional connectivity. By rehabilitating the tracks and establishing a new dry port in Voi, the project will reconnect the historic trade corridor stretching from Mombasa to Moshi, Arusha, and Bujumbura. Once operational, the route is projected to reduce the transit distance between Mombasa and Burundi by approximately 358 kilometers, offering a faster and more cost-effective alternative for cross-border freight. In addition to the rail works, the President commissioned several supporting infrastructure projects in Taita-Taveta County, including the KSh 950 million Voi Stadium and a KSh 300 million modern market equipped with cold storage. These integrated investments are designed to unlock the county’s rich potential in mining and agriculture by providing farmers and miners with direct, reliable access to export markets. The project is scheduled for completion by early 2027, aligning with the broader regional push to modernize legacy rail networks to complement the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) ecosystem. Why this matters For the national economy, this project reactivates a "dormant asset" to drive the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). By diverting heavy freight from roads to rail, the government will reduce road maintenance costs and carbon emissions while improving safety on the busy Taveta–Holili border corridor. For the region, it cements the East African Community’s (EAC) goal of seamless "multimodal" transport, ensuring that landlocked neighbors have multiple, efficient entry points for global trade.
