The Kenyan government has officially appointed CPA Tom Odhiambo Imbo as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited, known as KETRACO. Announced by Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and effective September 30, 2026, the appointment follows a rigorous recruitment process conducted by the state corporation board. Imbo brings over 19 years of financial management experience across public and private sectors, holding a Master of Business Administration in Finance and a Bachelor of Education in Economics from Kenyatta University. Having spent a decade at KETRACO in senior finance and strategy roles, including serving as Acting General Manager of Finance and Strategy, his deep institutional knowledge positions him to lead the national grid operator with continuity and strategic foresight.

This appointment forms part of a wider leadership restructuring across Kenya's critical energy state corporations, aimed at boosting operational efficiency and accelerating national electrification and clean energy targets.Alongside the KETRACO transition, Cabinet Secretary Wandayi announced new leadership at two other key agencies, naming Stephen Busieney as Managing Director of the Geothermal Development Company and Edward Kinyua as Director General of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority. These changes underscore the administration's deliberate pivot toward placing seasoned professionals at the helm of generation, transmission, and regulatory bodies. The leadership refresh arrives as Kenya pursues an ambitious agenda to achieve one hundred percent clean energy generation by 2030, a goal demanding substantial capital investments in geothermal exploration and transmission infrastructure.

Under Imbo, KETRACO maintains its vital mandate to develop, operate, and maintain national high-voltage electricity transmission infrastructure. The state corporation is actively executing multiple transmission lines designed to evacuate power from geothermal and wind installations in the Rift Valley and northern regions to major load centers. A primary operational focus for the new chief executive will involve tackling persistent system losses and infrastructure vandalism, which impact transmission reliability and consumer costs. Leveraging his extensive background in corporate finance, Imbo is anticipated to optimize capital expenditure, enforce rigorous financial controls, and improve revenue collection frameworks across the parastatal.

    Why This Matters

Leadership stability and financial acumen within transmission utilities directly influence investor confidence in capital-intensive power projects across East Africa. When national grid operators secure competent leadership with deep balance-sheet expertise, independent power producers and international financiers gain assurance regarding the operational integrity of power evacuation channels. This reduces offtake risks and lowers the cost of capital for renewable energy infrastructure development.

Strengthening executive oversight at KETRACO also impacts regional trade ambitions within the Eastern Africa Power Pool. Reliable domestic transmission networks serve as the backbone for cross-border power interconnections, enabling surplus green energy to be traded seamlessly among neighboring states. Effective management of technical and commercial losses ensures that national utilities maintain the fiscal health required to service long-term debt and expand grid capacity sustainably.

    Opportunities

    • Financial Advisors: Advisory firms can engage with KETRACO to structure innovative financing vehicles for capital-intensive high-voltage transmission projects.
    • Grid Contractors: Engineering and construction contractors have opportunities to bid for infrastructure modernization and regional interconnection tenders.
    • Technology Integrators: Software and hardware providers can pitch advanced monitoring systems to detect and mitigate technical losses and vandalism.
    • Institutional Lenders: Development finance institutions and private equity funds can partner with the utility to support long-term green energy grid expansion.
