Kenya has joined India and Italy in a strategic trilateral collaboration aimed at accelerating sovereign artificial intelligence adoption across Africa. The partnership was formalised during the AI Impact Summit 2026, with support from the United Nations Development Programme, and focuses on developing tailored AI solutions aligned with national priorities and regulatory frameworks. The initiative seeks to promote “sovereign AI” — a model where countries maintain ownership, governance and strategic control over artificial intelligence systems deployed within their borders. Rather than importing off-the-shelf solutions, the collaboration aims to build local capacity, develop regional data ecosystems, and strengthen digital public infrastructure. For Kenya, the partnership aligns with its broader digital transformation strategy, including investments in digital ID systems, fibre expansion, startup ecosystem growth and AI innovation. India brings experience in scaling digital public infrastructure at population level, while Italy contributes regulatory and research expertise. The collaboration is expected to support applications in agriculture, healthcare, climate modelling, public service delivery, financial inclusion and smart urban systems across Africa. As global AI competition intensifies, African nations are increasingly seeking structured partnerships that combine technical capability with governance safeguards. The trilateral framework offers a pathway for capacity building while maintaining national data sovereignty and regulatory alignment.
