WSO2 Establishes Johannesburg Hub to Capitalize on African Enterprise Modernization

WSO2, an enterprise digital infrastructure firm generating more than $100 million in annual recurring revenue, has established its first permanent African office in Johannesburg, South Africa. This new facility functions as a central regional hub for the software provider, expanding a global footprint that already includes operations in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Germany, India, Spain, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates. Founded in 2005, the company has chosen South Africa to anchor its next phase of growth following sustained expansion across the continent.

The physical establishment of the Johannesburg office directly addresses rising demand from African governments, telecommunications operators, banks and retailers seeking to update legacy systems and prepare their underlying architecture for artificial intelligence workloads. WSO2 reports that its African operations have recorded approximately 30 percent year-on-year revenue growth over the past two years. During this period, the regional customer base expanded from 40 to more than 65 organizations spanning 25 countries, highlighted by recent client deployments in Benin, Egypt and Côte d'Ivoire.

Dinal Gooneratne, WSO2's Vice President and General Manager for Africa, noted that the region represents one of the fastest-growing segments of the firm's global business. According to Gooneratne, the permanent presence in Johannesburg enables closer engagement with clients transitioning from initial testing phases to the active execution of modernization and artificial intelligence initiatives. WSO2 provides an open-source platform allowing clients to deploy services across cloud, on-premises and hybrid environments while maintaining strict data control, a capability that aligns with emerging regulatory frameworks such as Kenya's draft artificial intelligence policy.

Government contracts have formed a major pillar of this regional growth trajectory. WSO2 currently supplies the technology underpinning digital services for public sector entities including the Government of Malawi, the Kenya Revenue Authority, the Uganda Revenue Authority and Lesotho Revenue Services. Furthermore, the firm supports operational infrastructure for Uganda's National Information Technology Authority and Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. To sustain this momentum, the company intends to pursue partnership-led expansion across East, West and North Africa, culminating in the hosting of WSO2Con Africa in Nairobi from September 22 to 24.
