Mombasa recently became a central meeting point for Africa's business-events industry as the Africa MICE Summit & Awards 2026 brought together travel and tourism stakeholders. The gathering examined how the continent can expand its Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions sector to drive broader tourism, trade, and investment. Held from 29 September to 2 October 2026 at the Tembo International Convention Centre at PrideInn Paradise Beach Resort & Spa, the summit united industry leaders, destination marketers, hospitality businesses, event organisers, and investors from across the entire value chain.

The main summit took place on 1 to 2 October, following industry training sessions earlier in the week. Operating under the theme Building Africa's MICE Ecosystem for Trade, Investment & Innovation, the conference focused on the infrastructure, investment, connectivity, and collaboration needed to position African destinations as competitive venues for international business events. Discussions highlighted how business travellers generate demand well beyond the conference venue, requiring flights, accommodation, airport transfers, ground transport, excursions, and other destination services that create significant opportunities for travel agents and tour operators.

For destinations such as Mombasa, hosting the summit presents an opportunity to diversify beyond traditional beach holidays. Investment in conference facilities gives the destination another product to sell to international and regional markets, while the presence of the convention centre within a beach resort demonstrates how the hospitality sector captures both conference and leisure demand. Beyond individual venues, the summit addressed broader challenges facing Africa, including air connectivity, the cost of regional travel, visa processes, and coordination between tourism authorities and private-sector players.

The conference concluded with the Africa MICE Awards 2026 to recognise individuals and organisations contributing to industry development. Nicanor Sabula, CEO of the Kenya Association of Travel Agents, received the Convening Leader of the Year award, while the Association of Eastern and Southern Africa Travel Agents was named Best MICE Association Congress. This recognition underscores the increasingly vital role of travel-agent associations in connecting destinations, airlines, accommodation providers, and travellers across African markets.

    Why This Matters

The strategic expansion of Africa's MICE ecosystem directly impacts regional trade and economic integration by fostering professional networks and corporate investments. Business tourism acts as a powerful catalyst for infrastructural development, compelling governments and private stakeholders to upgrade transport networks, hospitality facilities, and digital capabilities. When destinations successfully capture high-value business events, the resulting foreign exchange inflows support broader service sectors and stimulate job creation across local economies.

However, realizing this potential requires systemic improvements in the wider travel ecosystem. Complex entry requirements, limited air routes, and high regional travel costs continue to hinder seamless movement across borders. Addressing these structural bottlenecks through coordinated policy reform and enhanced private-sector collaboration is essential to making African destinations genuinely competitive on the global business-events stage.

    Opportunities

    • Hospitality Investors: Opportunities to develop integrated convention and leisure facilities that capture dual-demand streams from business and holiday travellers.
    • Tour Operators: Commercial openings to design specialized extension packages, excursions, and corporate incentive programmes for conference delegates.
    • Transport Providers: Prospects to scale up ground transport, airport transfers, and regional flight connectivity to meet the logistics demands of large delegations.
    • Policy Advocates: A clear mandate for travel associations to collaborate with governments on streamlining visa processes and reducing regional travel friction.
