BasiGo Begins Local Assembly of Electric Vans: A Milestone for Kenyan Manufacturing
BasiGo, Kenya’s pioneering electric mobility company, has officially commenced the local assembly of its "Ma3e" electric vans at the Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA) plant in Mombasa. By transitioning from imported fully built units to Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits, BasiGo is not only accelerating the electrification of Kenya’s public transport sector but also fostering high-value manufacturing jobs and local technical capacity.
The shift to local assembly in April 2026 marks a strategic maturation for BasiGo. Utilizing the specialized infrastructure of AVA in Mombasa, the company is currently assembling an initial batch of 22 units scheduled for delivery to Nairobi’s public service vehicle (PSV) operators by May. This move allows BasiGo to leverage lower import duties on CKD kits compared to fully built units, a cost saving that is crucial for making electric "matatus" price-competitive with traditional diesel engines.
The Ma3e van is specifically designed for the high-frequency, high-usage demands of the Kenyan transport industry. With a range of approximately 250 kilometers on a single charge and a rapid-charging capability that aligns with driver rest breaks, the vehicle addresses the primary operational concerns of matatu owners. Furthermore, BasiGo’s "Pay-As-You-Drive" battery-subscription model remains a core pillar of the rollout, allowing operators to pay for the battery as a variable operating expense rather than a massive upfront capital cost. This local assembly milestone is expected to scale to hundreds of units annually, positioning Kenya as the regional manufacturing hub for green urban transit.

For the national economy, local assembly is a victory for the "Buy Kenya, Build Kenya" initiative. It retains a larger portion of the value chain within the country and reduces the foreign exchange outflow associated with importing finished vehicles. For the urban environment, replacing a single diesel matatu with an electric Ma3e prevents approximately 10 to 15 tons of CO2 emissions per year. For the investor and visionary leader, this proves that the infrastructure for a carbon-neutral Africa is being built today, one assembly line at a time.
