AfDB and UNDP Launch $10 Billion AI Initiative to Transform Africa’s Digital Economy

The African Development Bank Group and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have officially launched the AI 10 Billion Initiative, a transformative continental drive to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence across Africa. The announcement was made during the Nairobi AI Forum 2026, a high-level event co-hosted by the governments of Kenya and Italy. The forum brought together global leaders, including representatives from the European Union and the G7, to shift the conversation from AI theory to concrete, investable delivery. The initiative aims to mobilize up to $10 billion by 2035 to build the foundational pillars of Africa's "Intelligence Economy." This includes large-scale investments in sovereign data infrastructure, compute capacity (such as the 1.5 million GPU hours recently allocated to African innovators), and specialized skills development. By focusing on entrepreneurship—from proof-of-concept to equity and debt financing—the program targets the creation of 40 million new jobs and a potential $1 trillion increase to the continent’s GDP over the next decade. Guided by the AfDB’s 2025 AI Productivity Report, the initiative emphasizes "right-sized" AI ecosystems tailored to local energy availability and specific African challenges, such as food security and climate resilience. A key highlight of the forum was the integration of AI into Italy’s Mattei Plan for Africa, which seeks to move beyond traditional aid toward a model of "co-creation" and strategic industrial partnerships between Europe and Africa. The AI 10 Billion Initiative is not just a funding pool but a strategic roadmap to ensure Africa transitions from being a consumer of global AI solutions to a primary producer of sovereign talent and innovation. To turn these goals into tangible projects, the AfDB will embark on a 10-month global roadshow to engage governments, private sector players, and development partners for further resource mobilization.
